Commission FAQs

Thank you for taking an interest in my work! It is my pleasure to ensure that every single commission I create is unique, personal, and meaningful.

Below are some common questions about commissions. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to hearing about your commission idea and creating a custom painting or drawing for you.

How do I commission a painting? What’s the process?

Start by sending me a message with your idea and time frame. We’ll discuss concept, time frame, size options, pricing, and any other questions you may have.

Once you are ready to commission the piece and I have received your deposit (generally half the total price), I will begin the painting according to our agreed-upon time frame.

Do you accept all commissions?

No. Because some projects and other commissions are scheduled out many months in advance, I am only able to accept a limited number of commissions each season.

Additionally, not every project will be the best fit. I specialize in vibrant, colorful paintings of people, places, and things. I often combining representation with abstraction. If what you envision isn’t well aligned with the style of artwork I specialize in, I won’t be able to accept the commission. In that situation, I may be able to refer you to another artist that creates the type of work you are looking for.

How long will it take to complete my commission?

It depends on the size and complexity of the painting as well as what other projects have already been scheduled before your commission. If you have a specific deadline, please let me know. Once we’ve discussed the details of your piece, I’ll be able to give you a more specific completion date.

How much does a commissioned painting cost? What types of payment do you accept? Are payment plans available?

It depends on the size and complexity of the piece. Portrait pieces are priced based on size as well as the number of figures. Let me know what you have in mind and I can provide you with prices for a few different size options.

I accept cash, credit card, or PayPal.

Yes, I offer payment plans. If you need payments broken up into 4 to 6 payments, please let me know. (I begin work once half the total price has been paid.)

What types of reference images do you work from?

I prefer to take my own reference photos as it is part of my creative process - but I can also work from your photos if needed. Let me know what you have in mind and we’ll discuss options.

Will you create a preliminary sketch of the piece for my approval?

Generally no. If you’re commissioning something complex, I may send you a loose sketch before beginning to make sure we’re on the same page. Otherwise, I prefer to be guided by your concept, agreed upon reference images, and the creative process. Presumably you are commissioning a piece because you like my work. I will work diligently to create a finished piece that will delight you. The big reveal at the end is part of the joy of commissioning a painting or drawing.

Can I see the work in progress?

Generally no. I prefer to engage fully in the process of creating until the piece is complete. The big reveal at the end is part of the joy of commissioning a painting or drawing. However - if you have any concerns about the direction of the work, it’s progress, or anything at all, please let me know.

Will you post my commission online - on your website or social media?

If it is okay with you, I will. I retain the copyright to all of my work, including commissions. Of course, if the piece is a surprise - or if you’d prefer I don’t share it for any other reason - I’m happy to accomodate that request.

May I make copies/prints of the work to share with friends and family?

I retain the copyright to all of my work, including commissions. If you’d like prints of the work made for family or friends, I’d be happy to make some for you for a small fee.

Can you ship the artwork to me?

Yes! I ship to most locations. If you are outside of the United States, please send me a message to discuss shipping options.
